Alone With God

Spiritual Reflections and Essays, 2000-2024

2025

Alone with God is a collection of 56 spiritual reflections and essays written over the past 24 years. Some of the reflections were published in Pendle Hill pamphlets 358 and 469, and some essays published in Friends Journal (included elsewhere on this website). However, about half of the reflections and essays are published in here for the first time.

I began writing these reflections and essays while participating in the prayer vigil for peace on Independence Mall in Philadelphia. In the evening, I sat in my apartment reflection on my experience that day. "I sat in a pool of light in that darkness, seemingly alone but not alone. There was another presence that was the source of the words that came to me."

Twenty years later I had a similar experience during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sitting in self-isolation in my apartment, God was with me again and used other instruments to bring me words to hear and share. Books, music, birds, statues provoked reflections on a wide variety of subjects and drew associations with the words of such spiritual teachers as Jesus, Buddha, Marcus Aurelius, Thomas Merton, and Leonard Cohen among others. Although rooted in my personal experience and my perspective as a Quaker, these reflections and essays touch on such a wide range of subjects and spiritual traditions, they will, I hope, provide spiritual nourishment regardless of your spiritual orientation.
