Wait and Watch
Spiritual Practice, Rehearsal, and Performance

Pendle Hill Pamphlet 485

2024

Monthly Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) offer their members two primary experiences: attendance at meeting for worship and at meeting for worship with attention to business. While each has an ostensible purpose—opening yourself to God's presence or making necessary decisions—another way of looking at them is as educational experiences and to ask what they teach.

Using the analogy of practice, rehearsal, and performance found in the theater, musical concerts, and sports, Parts One and Two of Wait and Watch (words Jesus spoke to three of his disciples) describe how meeting for worship and meeting for worship with attention to business help develop seven skills that can transform the performance of our daily lives, as illustrated in Part Three with many personal examples.

The pamphlet is based on two essays previously published in Friends Journal.
