Last Rites

A Novel of Spiritual Transformation

Published under the pseudonym Andrew Ochs.

We began working in late morning so I would rise at eight and go to the beach to lie in the sand and read. It was mid-May; the beach remained deserted even as the morning wore on, pale white sand extending endlessly in either direction. My only companions were a dozen seagulls lined up along the edge of the water staring out to sea, watching for something only they could imagine

So begins the story of a nameless young man who aspires to be a painter but is pursued by mystical visions he both fears and desires. Last Rites is a novel of spiritual transformation presented in three parts titled by the three phases of the alchemical process, representing the themes of despair, acceptance and transformation. There are no characters in the conventional sense, no dialogue, no plot, no action, only the thoughts and observations of the narroarato as he experiences his life. Written in a style that suggests the way the young man might reveal his inner-most secrets to a friend late at night, Last Rites invites the reader to identify with the emotional experiences of the narrator and to share the inspiration of his transformation.
